Welcome to another entry in my photographic journey along America’s rails-to-trails! This time, I had the pleasure of exploring the stunning New River Trail State Park in Virginia, a hidden gem for biking, walking, and horseback riding enthusiasts. This 57-mile trail follows an old railroad line, weaving through some of the most serene landscapes you’ll find, connecting Galax, Virginia, to the historic Jackson Ferry Shot Tower
The Experience
The New River Trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue. Riding through the trail, you’re greeted by breathtaking views of lush green forests, rushing river rapids, charming bridges, and even remnants of the region's industrial past. The sounds of flowing water and the rustle of the wind through the trees provide a tranquil backdrop as you pedal through this scenic haven
Highlights from the Ride
During my adventure, I captured moments that highlight the trail's charm:
Waterfalls and Rapids: The soothing sights and sounds of the New River’s cascades, like the one near Fries Junction, create a peaceful escape from the bustle of everyday life.
The Historic Iron Bridge: Spanning the New River, this bridge showcases the enduring craftsmanship of the railway era while offering sweeping views of the water and surrounding hills.
Picnic Spots and Rest Areas: Cozy shelters like the one at Fries Junction are perfect for taking a break, enjoying a snack, and soaking in the scenery.
Industrial Relics: From the old power station to the imposing Jackson Ferry Shot Tower, history is alive on this trail. These landmarks offer a glimpse into the region’s rich past, once powered by the railway and the river.
The Dam Crossing: One of the most striking features of the ride is the stretch along the dam, where the calm waters on one side contrast with the rushing spillway on the other—a testament to nature and engineering working in harmony
Perfect for All Explorers
Whether you’re a cycling enthusiast like me, a nature lover looking for a peaceful walk, or an equestrian seeking a scenic route, the New River Trail has something for everyone. The well-maintained path is ideal for riders of all skill levels, and the flat terrain makes it family-friendly too.
Bringing the Trail Home
As part of my mission to celebrate these beautiful trails, I’ve created a poster of this ride, featuring the most memorable moments and landscapes captured along the way.
